Google's Gemini brings new search capabilities to Gmail on Android

Google has introduced a new feature that brings the power of its AI, Gemini, directly to Gmail on Android devices. Announced on [date], this feature allows users to search and interact with their emails more dynamically, making it easier to find specific information and manage their inboxes efficiently.

A New Way to Search Your Inbox

Traditionally, Gmail users have relied on the search bar at the top of their inboxes to find emails and information. While that feature isn't going away, Google is adding a new Gemini button next to the search bar, enhancing the search capabilities with AI-driven queries. This update follows the earlier release of Gemini in the side panel of Gmail on the web, where it has been helping users summarize, respond to, and search through their emails and Google Drive files.

With the new Gmail Q&A feature on Android, users can ask Gemini a range of questions to quickly locate specific details within their inbox. For example, users can query Gemini with prompts like "What was the PO number for my agency?" or "Show me emails about quarterly planning." Additionally, Gemini can display unread messages, show emails from specific senders, or even summarize conversations on a particular topic.

Enhancing Productivity on the Go

Google's rollout of this feature on Android—and soon on iOS—marks a significant step forward in mobile productivity. By bringing Gemini's advanced search capabilities to mobile devices, Google aims to help users manage their emails more effectively, whether they are at their desks or on the go.

"We are excited to help users supercharge their productivity with the help of Gemini in Gmail," Google stated in its blog post. "Users now have even more capabilities from Gemini to help them get more done during their day."

Getting Started with Gmail Q&A

To access the new Gmail Q&A feature, users need to have smart features and personalization turned on in their settings. Admins can enable this setting for their users through the Admin console.

Once enabled, users can access Gemini in the Gmail app by tapping the black Gemini star at the top right of their app or from a "summarize this email" chip. While the feature currently searches only within the inbox, Google plans to expand its capabilities to include information from Google Drive in the future.

Rollout and Availability

The new Gmail Q&A feature is being gradually rolled out, with full visibility expected within 15 days starting August 29, 2024. It is available for Google Workspace customers with Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, and Education Premium add-ons, as well as for Google One AI Premium users.
