Outage Season: Big messaging platforms, Facebook, Messenger and Instagram all hit by a major outage

What happened to be a peaceful, easygoing day for many, turned out to be a major problem as thousands of Facebook, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger users were auto-logged out of their accounts after Meta experienced a major outage.

Facebook went down on March 5, 2024, due to “technical glitches” that led to big disruption for three of their social media platforms. It was all rampage on X, with users protesting the outage, even X CEO, Elon Musk, had to just be on the trend to make jokes to ease the tension on his platform.

One X user said “I first noticed the problem when after checking the Facebook app on my iPhone 15 Pro Max, I was informed the session had expired and I needed to log in again. After putting in the password, The app did a virtual hiccup and told me there was something wrong as continued to boot me back to the login screen.”

According to the DownDetector website, about half a million users were kicked out of their accounts worldwide. The website showed that the incident began at about 10:01 AM EST, and rapidly escalated to over half a million users by half an hour later.

The good news is that the issue was resolved the same day and it can’t be compared to what major telecommunications companies faced the previous week.

As of when this blog was written, no official Meta statement was in our inboxes but Andy Stone, communications director at Meta, tweeted on X, “We’re aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now.” It didn't take long for many users to camp under the tweet asking questions about the outage and when it would be resolved.

There are many possibilities why the outage is happening across multiple platforms. Well, it could be a from a clutch of servers or an outage in their data centers or there could be a misconfigured cloud instance.

So, until we hear from Meta, I believe it is appropriate to cease this live blog. Everything appears to be back up and running, and Facebook is once again a source of dubious information, opinions,, and photographs of people going about their daily lives.
