The U.K. and the U.S. pledge to punish cyber criminals together at the Cyber Management Review

With the rise of pandemic challenges through the roof, cyber crimes became insanely popular as a medium of money-grabbing effort for criminals. Not only in the U.K. and the U.S. but also worldwide, cybercrimes increased a significant number. As global idols, the U.K. and the U.S. are coming together to tackle the issue. At an annual meeting, both countries confirmed intentions to “impose consequences” on shared enemies.

The 2021 Cyber Management Review brought together intelligence and defence officials in a shared effort to fight cybercrimes. Online IT dictionary Techopedia defines cyber-attacks as a “deliberate exploitation of computer systems, technology-depended enterprise and networks.”

The event took place two years after both countries military officially conducted an in-person headquarters-level forum to discuss combined effort in cyberspace.

National Security Agency, U.S. Cyber Command, U.K. Government Communications Headquarters and the U.K. Strategic Command conducted a cyber management review on rising threats. Military and intelligence efforts in cyberspace are crucial as they can tackle the matter from its core. The put together strength brings them an offensive position after being on the defence for a long time.

The event occurred in Maryland earlier this month, enabling touchpoints between nations to develop world-class cyber capabilities. Data is power, and when one has more data than usual, anything can happen. They can either be over-utilised or under-utilised. The combined force will leverage and enable the partnership to “generate shared insights, improve collective defences, and impose common costs for malicious cyber activity undermining the international rules-based order.”

The joint commitment to a bilateral relationship in cyberspace will widen the capabilities to protect against common threats.

“As like-minded allies for two centuries, the United Kingdom and the United States share a close and enduring relationship. Our two nations today face strategic threats in an interconnected, digital world that seek to undermine our shared principles, norms, and values.”

“We agree that strategic engagement in our cyberspace is crucial to defending our way of life by addressing these evolving threats with a full range of capabilities.”

Both countries military and intelligence officials are sworn to protect with combined effort and set an example for responsible state behaviour in cyberspace.

Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), National Security Agency (NSA), and the cyber command met at the Cyber Management Review meeting to create a more practical challenge than individual effort.

Though they did not specifically mention any common types of threats, they said a proportionate action would be taken from this day forward.

Director of GCHQ Jeremy Fleming, General Sir Patrick Sanders, UK Strategic Commander, General Paul Nakasone, US National Security Agency director and commander participated. The U.S. nationals Security Agency and Command represented the U.S. side of Cyber Command.

Military and intelligence departments have worked together to bring out the speciality of both challenges for a long time. Now two countries intelligence and military working together seems promising, and we are eager to see the results. In recent times cyber-attacks such as ransomware, malware, identity theft, social engineering and theft increased significantly. It is challenging for a single country to work against different types of threats from various sources. The combined strength will empower to bring down threat finding time along with identifying threat counter.

Cybercrime strategy report presented to the parliament by the Secretary of State for the Home Department by Command of Her Majesty in March 2010 officially identifies threats to children, hate crime, harassment, political extremism, financial crime, online fraud, identity theft, terrorism, data security, intellectual property theft, a threat to Government and along with indirect impacts. Since then, it grew at a phenomenal rate, and the combined effort is something we waited a long time to come to reality.
